Part  Reading Comprehension (220)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET.

Passage 1

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the Websites youve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, its likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seenthe 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that its important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs () you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is: Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is no.

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is slipping away, and that bothers me.

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths () to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile

2014

movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon.

But privacy does matterat least sometimes. Its like health: When you have it you dont notice it. Only when its gone do you wish youd done more to protect it.

41. What does the author mean by saying the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked(Lines 3-4, Para. 2)?

A. Peoples personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.

B. In the 21st century people try every means to look into others secrets.

C. People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.

D. Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

C. There should be a distance even between friends.

D. There should be fewer disputes between friends.

43. Why does the author say we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret (Line 5, Para. 3)?

A. Modern society has finally evolved into an open society.

B. People leave traces around when using modern technology.

C. There are always people who are curious about others affairs.

D. Many search engines profit by revealing peoples identities.

44. What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?

A. They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

B. They use various loyalty cards for business transactions.

C. They rely more and more on electronic devices.

D. They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.

45. According to the passage, privacy is like health in that _________ .

A. people will make every effort to keep it

B. its importance is rarely understood

C. it is something that can easily be lost

D. people dont cherish it until they lose it

Passage 2

As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing diseaseespecially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious() foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for

2015

any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.

The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely not ill and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the bodys special needs. Both types have simply been called well. In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms well and wellness only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise and they make a point of monitoring their bodys condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap may be well,in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. Wellness may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.

D. to keep a proper balance between work and leisure

50. According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of people would be considered healthy?

D. People who can recover from illness even without seeking medical care.

Passage 3

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread to period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded and available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating, has to appear before a student court.
